why we have created the artists residency award

Born from a passion project, we’ve grown into something much larger. as performers and creatives ourselves, we want to do everything we can to break down those financial barriers that hold you back from launching into the career of your dreams.

this is why we have created the artistic residency award.

‘The Factory’s artistic residency award allows under-represented and talented individuals to access the space and resources they need with no overhead costs or long-winded application processes. we wanted to imagine a space where as an artist you can feel at home and have time to indulge in your creative process.’

We know how difficult it can be to find affordable space to develop work properly.

The dance artist residency has been created to support dancers, choreographers and dance teachers who need time in a studio to rehearse, test ideas, film, refine material and build something new.

this is not standard studio hire and is not a paid teaching role. it is a selected development programme offering space, structure and a platform for artists creating movement-based work.

the aim is to give artists room to build their work before it meets an audience.

who can apply for the artistic residency award?

If you are:
- a director or choreographer with a passion project or story to tell.
- An aspiring or established educator looking to embark on a summer intensive or workshop series.
- A musical director or spoken word leader in need of a safe, creative space. - A CREATIVE WHO JUST NEEDS SOMEONE TO GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY

Then this programme is for you.

our studios have access to pole and ariel equipment so we welcome all styles of dance and movement.

what to expect

The dance artist residency is a selected 4-week development programme for dancers, choreographers and dance teachers building new work.

selected residents receive pre-agreed studio access hours across the residency period to rehearse, develop, film, test ideas, build workshops or create new work.

As part of the residency, each resident develops a sharing moment shaped around their practice. This could be an open class, workshop, movement lab, content collaboration, work-in-progress sharing or another agreed audience-facing session.

Some sharing moments may be ticketed. where this applies, the ticketing arrangements will be agreed with the residents before the residency is confirmed, based on the type of session being offered.
